Vasectomies, while they can be performed, do not have the same beneficial effect as neutering because testosterone is still produced. Neutering has positive behavioral effects as well.
These include less aggression towards people and animals, reduced roaming, less dominance, less marking of territory and unwanted sexual behavior. Even though your lab is nice now, he may develop more undesirable behaviors as he gets older.
Some male dogs may be less active after neutering and may gain weight. Monitoring their caloric intake can help with this issue.
Overall, neutering is a big positive for male dogs!
